A friend recently lamented a “terrible” board getting together with she’d only attended, and wondered if this was possible index to recruit better members. I just posed problem to a number of individuals, and the answers were all fairly similar: great board associates are interested in your cause, dependable, obtainable and considering attending group meetings and occurrences, willing to engage in fundraising, and forward-thinking.
Although this is certainly authentic, I as well believe that the qualities which will make a great mother board member exceed background, expertise and organizational perception. While it is easy to focus on these features, there are many more, plus the key to getting them is often in a mother board member’s frame of mind.
Passionate about your cause – It goes without saying that the passionate panel affiliate will be a lot more invested in the achievements of your organization. They could have a personal connection to the mission or simply just have a solid desire to fulfill the vision. In either case, they will be committed to your cause for the long haul and will also be excited to support the board’s initiatives and strategies.
Spots around four corners – A fantastic board affiliate understands that the role for the board is normally not to run the company, but rather to support this in its development and accomplishment. They can see the trends and likely risks that will effect the business in three to five years, and can inspire the executive team to think greater.
Actively has contributed to committee conversations – A high board member is always searching for ways to include value to the board. They will aren’t scared to share their particular opinions and can offer imaginative solutions that can help the board advance its agenda.
